One of my largest prints to date, this work depicts another whale specimen from the Natural History Museum collection. The subject is a historic section of whale baleen, with individual plates held together by a simple wire rod. What first drew me to the specimen was the way the baleen fans outward, inspiring the title of the work.
By abstracting the specimen from its original context, the image takes on an ambiguous quality. It could easily be mistaken for a plant, a feather, or even strands of hair. This ambiguity reflects one of the central ideas within my practice: that nature continually echoes and repeats itself across species and forms. Patterns, structures, and gestures reappear throughout the natural world, reminding us that all living things are fundamentally connected.
