This etching is made from a photograph I took of a sperm whale tooth from the collections of the Natural History Museum, London. The tooth had been cut in half for scientific research, revealing an intricate internal structure that would otherwise remain hidden.

I was invited to photograph specimens from the museum's collection stores, where millions of objects are preserved beyond public view. This was one of the specimens I found myself returning to. Holding it in my hand was an extraordinary experience; despite being only one half of a whole, its weight and scale hinted at the immense animal it came from.

The exposed interior transforms the specimen from a reasonably familiar object into something abstract and sculptural. Through the etching process, the delicate textures, growth patterns and cavities become tactile, inviting a closer look at a form that is both scientifically significant and unexpectedly beautiful.
